Matchington Journey is a match-3 puzzle game with a world travel theme. The main character and her adorable dog need the player's help to add pictures of their travels to a keepsake book. The player completes tasks via match-3 boards across levels with a limited number of moves to collect jigsaw puzzle pieces that magically align in the book to form the pictures.
Each match-3 puzzle displays standard travel-related items, such as pill bottles, seat cushions and waypoint icons. On some levels, the player retrieves collectible items like green bottles or rare items like blue blow-up mattresses. They complete these tasks by forming lines of three or more identical items on the columns and rows and using boosters and special items.
The player unlocks red paddle, hammer and glove boosters over time. They create special items by aligning basic ones in different ways or large clusters. The special items include an explosive rocket and a larger wrapped explosive device. The player can also combine some special items to make more powerful ones. They can make each one even more powerful by aligning basic items into ever-larger clusters.
Matchington Journey also provides a chargeable rainbow-colored spinning top under the task area that the player can use to remove all of one type of item from the board. This tool is especially useful when they need to clear away sand or locked seat belts that prevent match play.
